There are very, very few of these on the Sound.A 398-acre state park in Washington, Dash Point State Park straddles King and Pierce counties. Its a great place with easy access, plentiful parking and huge beaches. The water is fairly warm, but by no means comfortable swimming tempature. Its perfect for skimboarding or little kids just getting used to being around the water. The water stays ankle to knee deep for vast distances. The water at Dash Point is only about 4 ft. The beach is huge and sandy, and the water is shallow. The best thing about Dash Point is the "kid friendliness". There is very little shade and only a couple of benchs, which most of them are not on the beach itself, but you have plenty of room to spread out. We go almost every weekend during the summer and have never seen the beach full. When the tide is out, the beaches can be up to 1000 ft. The areas you can get to, most of them are to highly contaiminated water. The majority of the Sound is rocky and unaccessable. We were really disappointed in the Sounds lack of beaches. My family and I moved to the Puget Sound area about a year ago from the California Bay Area. ![]() Still, I would camp out here again in a heart beat, and I'm sure the kids won't waste any time asking to go back. If you have a barky territorial dog you might want to choose a more secluded camp ground, because people will be walking by all night. I got fed up and asked them to tether the dog, but I heard them whispering about releasing him a little while later, and the "sit, Trigger, sit!" continued. Our neighbors had a dog which they did not secure at the back of the campground (per the park rules) who would bark every time someone walked by to use the bathroom, followed by lots of "sit, Trigger, sit! Get over here, Trigger!" etc. ![]() The spot we had reserved turned out to be a postage stamp, but fortunately we were there on a week night and didn't have a problem changing our reservation. The camp sites are convenient and the bathroom facilities are decent, but be prepared to hear your neighbors and make sure you get a site that will be big enough for your tent. At high tide, this beach becomes absolutely covered in seaweed and silt, so you will want to time your trip accordingly. If you're coming to camp, plan to drive down to the beach (because the walk back up is long, especially after a fun day at the beach) at low tide and stay until the tide starts creeping up on the beach. At low tide, the beach seems to stretch forever and the children can wade out very far and still only be in water up to their wastes. Dash Point is our favorite local beach, and such a convenient place for a quick camp out with the kids.
